From Screen to Court: Analyzing Basketball Strategy Through Film

Basketball can be learned in a bunch of different ways. One way is film. Film provides campers with new ways to better understand the sport, and really get a feel for how games are supposed to be. Here, we’ll go over how basketball footage can help with incorporating important strategies. 

First, what’s Considered Basketball Film? 

Basketball films aren’t necessarily movies that are about basketball. They’re films that showcase basketball games, and also have good or bad examples of gameplay footage. For instance, watching recaps from professional teams is a good way to start. If there are certain basketball teams and players that you want the team to emulate, then do that. One example is the 1993 Bulls. The Chicago Bulls were unstoppable for a bit, and this footage is a good way to see how to play. 


The cool thing about this is if you sit down and explain the plays and talk with the campers about how this footage can impact the way that they run the game, it gets them to really work together, and better understand what’s required out of everyone. 

Dissecting game footage 

Game footage is important to look at. 

With game footage, you see what players do right, and do wrong. Game footage also shows how teams would have performed better. 



One way to do this is to start with the initial beginning of the game, and slowly go through different ways that the players work, and how they do it right. 

A cool thing about this too, is sometimes the gameplay footage helps a player better understand certain techniques. 

One example, for instance, could be shooting three-pointers.   Looking at the play-by-play factors that go into this is important, because it allows you to strategize correctly, and dissect how they did this. 

Whether it’s foot placement, or how much air they got, this is a good way to really see just how the players do it, so you can copy them. 

Looking at game patterns 

Game patterns are important too. 

Some games have certain ways that the plays go. It might be that one player is screwing  up through screens or improper positioning. That constant play may be what’s wrong with them. 

In a similar vein, maybe there’s things that the other team is doing right. for example. Maybe that winning team is able to really harness their ability to play with a certain camaraderie.   With that said, game patterns allow you to effectively look for what they did better or worse, and also what you can do to also follow that same strategy. 



Better strategy  

Finally, let’s talk about strategy.

You sit there, poring over the different pieces of footage for hours. You feel as if you’re going crazy.

Well, now you have everything for a better strategy.

Basketball footage allows you to strategize in a more effective manner. You highlight just how to be better on an individual level.

You’re also able to work together Beter as a team with this. Sometimes, when you work as a team, you’ll be able to properly understand, harnessing all of this.

So yes, when you sit down and look at strategy, it isn’t just for your own benefit, but it’s also for the benefit of everyone else. Your team is right there, waiting for you, so you need to take advantage of that. 

With that said, always prepare, and get the footage that you know will work. And then, once you’re done, you’ll be able to succeed with your home court games and do even better as well for you.

How Basketball Camp Took Me from JV to Varsity: A Personal Story

Ever since I was a little kid, I loved basketball. I was hooked from the very first time my dad took me to my first NBA game. I wanted to be just like all of those basketball stars on the court, with cool shoes, a fresh-looking uniform, and having the crowds chanting and cheering my name. The only problem was I was a skinny, short white kid, so my chances of becoming a professional basketball player were slim to none. Nonetheless, I dedicated all my free time to the sport, hoping to squeeze out a small scholarship for college. 

Once I hit middle school, my prospects of obtaining said scholarship seemed less and less. As discouraged as I was, I didn't give up hope, and I kept putting everything I had into every practice. The trouble was, I never got much better than JV status. That was fine for me then, seeing I was only in middle school and had time to catch up in speed, size, and…talent. However, I was still in the same place once high school hit.


This is what began what I call my gut check period. Did I really have what it took to become a collegiate player? Was I wasting my time day in and day out during the season trying to get better? I had a lot of questions I needed to answer, and I was about ready to give up when one of my teammates suggested basketball camp. Of course, I had heard of basketball camp before; I had never looked into it. But he had told me that it made the night and day difference in his game, and since he had just made varsity, he had my full attention. 


That very night, I went home and researched what types of basketball camps were near me. The following month, there would be the opportunity to enroll in one only 30 minutes away from my house. I got permission from my parents and was signed up that very evening. A month later, I was rolling up to camp.


This was when everything changed for me. The amount of attention in coaching I received at camp jump-started me into a whole other level of basketball. During the two weeks that I was enrolled, I spent every single day on the court running dozens of drills, shooting hundreds of shots, watching hours of game tape, bonding with my other teammates, and being taught valuable lessons by my coaches. 




Not to mention, my coaches had played both collegiately and professionally. They had already lived the dream that I had had since I was a kid. They could show me where I was going wrong and how to correct it. The time I spent at basketball camp was the most valuable time I had ever spent on a court. I knew I had left a better ballplayer than when I had come, and I was ready for the next basketball season.


Fast forward to the Fall when basketball tryouts were beginning. Up until that point, I had put into practice everything that my coaches at camp had taught me. When I stepped onto the court to try out, I let them be the only voice in my head. The end result was that I finally had graduated from JV to varsity. For the first time since I started my basketball journey, I knew I had a real shot at achieving my dream of a college scholarship, thanks to basketball camp.

Does Basketball Camp Improve Teamwork Skills?

Suppose you've ever played a team sport you know sometimes just how difficult it can be to work as a group. Even the best teams can have their issues both on and off the court as the drama can quickly unfold, especially in those younger years of middle school and high school. While this is normal, coaches will spend extra time and dedicate resources to help make their teams cohesive. One such method is a camp



Let's take basketball camp for example. Basketball is a huge team sport. If your team does not get along or learn how to play as a unit, you will lose every game. Even if you have one or two standout players, they can take you far, but they will only be able to bring you some of the way. (Just ask Michael Jordan or Lebron James). Therefore, coaches will often send their players to a basketball camp to learn how to become better teammates, or they will host their own camp.


So, how exactly does a basketball camp improve teamwork skills? Well, through many different ways. The first is that it forces the players together away from everything comfortable. Camps are often an overnight experience for several nights in a row. And sometimes even several weeks. During this time, these players are away from everything they know and only have each other to lean on. Technology is often banned as the coaches want their players to unplug and focus on honing their athletic ability and learning to communicate better.


Another way basketball camp helps improve teamwork is that you learn how to work together as a team the entire time you're at camp. From the time you wake up in the morning until you lay your head on your pillow at night, your coaches are having you run drills together, work together, eat together, break out sessions together, and bunk in the same dorm together. You rarely spend time apart, forcing players to get to know each other and allowing for stressful situations to arise to learn how to handle inner turmoil within the group properly.


Basketball camp also teaches the players how to be better athletes overall. And when your team gets better overall, your chance of winning increases tremendously. Plus, the hours you spend on a court help you learn how your teammates play the game and anticipate what they will do given any situation that arises when a game is being played. For example, does your teammate turn right or left when blocked? Do they go for the three-point shot every chance they get, or will they charge the net? These are things players will learn about each other as they spend time in close proximity playing hours together during these camp sessions. 




Basketball camp also can help to improve your relationship with your coaches. After all, they will be your guardians while you're away from home, and you will be reliant upon them to lead you, guide you, and look out for your well-being in many ways. Trust and bonds can be formed with your coaches at camp in a way that they would not if you had normal practice. And when the coach-to-player relationship is strong, statistically speaking, you have a better chance of winning your games.
